Specialty courses introduce you to the various techniques of scuba diving with distinguished tasks. Blue Reef Scuba offers a wide range of PADI Specialty courses for all divers and non-divers according to their level of experience.

    Coral Reef Conservation
    The 'AWARE - Coral Reef Conservation Specialty' course teaches divers, snorkellers and non-divers about the vital role of coral reefs in the marine environment. The course also familiarizes participants with the current state of the world's coral reefs and how they can help.
    This non-diving course includes:

    • An introduction to Project AWARE
    • The importance of coral reefs to marine ecosystems and coastal areas
    • Coral reef biology, association and competition
    • The status of the world's coral reefs
    • How participants can help, including responsible diving and snorkeling practices

    Project AWARE
    If you want to learn about the plight of worldwide aquatic ecosystems and how you can protect them, this specialty course is for you. This non-diving specialty course may also be conducted in conjunction with other PADI Specialty Diver courses. You will learn about aquatic ecosystem degradation and the conservation measures protecting aquatic resources. This includes:

    • The Project AWARE philosophy
    • The importance and interdependence of worldwide aquatic ecosystems
    • Current issues regarding fisheries, coastal zone
    • management and marine pollution
    • The status of several critically degraded marine environments
    • How you can help

    Specialties for Scuba Divers:

    Equipment
    During your PADI Equipment Specialist program, you will familiarise yourself with the operation and maintenance of your personal scuba gear. The program is not an equipment repair program but it does give you:

    • Theory, principles and operation of dive equipment
    • Routine recommended care and maintenance procedure
    • Common problems with equipment and recommended professional maintenance procedures
    • Simple suggestions for comfortable equipment configurations and an introduction to new equipment

    Specialties for Open Water Divers with two training dives

    Boat Diver
    Boat diving planning, organization, procedures, techniques, problems and hazards. You will learn:

    1. Proper boat diving etiquette, including equipment storage and conduct
    2. Common boat terminology
    3. Specific and local boat diving laws and ordinances
    4. Overview of emergency and safety equipment needed on private dive boats

    Diver Propulsion Vehicle
    During the program, you'll learn the techniques you need to know for safe diver propulsion vehicle operation. This includes:

    1. Diver propulsion vehicle dive planning organization, procedures, techniques, problems and hazards
    2. Equipment and procedure considerations
    3. How to avoid harming fragile aquatic life

    Drift Diver
    During your PADI Drift Diver course, you will learn about drift dive planning, organization, techniques and potential hazards, as well as special equipment and procedures, for example buoyancy. You will also be taught about the following:

    1. Special equipment floating devices, lines and reels
    2. Proper buoyancy control, navigation and communication
    3. Choosing a dive site and overview about the origin and effects of different currents
    4. Techniques for a proper buddy system and diving in a group

    AWARE Fish Identification
    This course will introduce you to the most common fish families and species found in the waters surrounding West Malaysia. You will also learn basic fish identification and scientific survey techniques as well as how important personal involvement is in aquatic conservation. This will include:

    1. Information on Project 'AWARE' and aquatic protection worldwide
    2. Characteristics of fish families and species
    3. Fish survey techniques and strategies
    4. Fish identification, dive planning, organization and procedures

    Multilevel Diving
    You will learn techniques and procedures of Multilevel Diving with the use of the wheel and/or computer. The topics covered will be:

    1. Definition and advantages of Multilevel diving
    2. Methods of dive planning Multilevel dives by using the Wheel and/or computer
    3. How to avoid decompression sickness (Bends).
    4. Procedures for emergency decompression
    5. Be a S.A.F.E. diver
    6. Flying after diving
    7. Care and maintenance of dive computers

    Peak Performance Buoyancy
    Additional training of buoyancy control beyond beginners. This includes:

    1. Review of buoyancy control skills
    2. Weight positioning and adjustment
    3. Fine tuning of buoyancy while under water
    4. Streamlined movement under water
    5. Visualisation techniques
    6. PADI's basic weighting guidelines

    Underwater Naturalist
    This course is an introduction to the underwater aquatic environment and will help develop safe and responsible aquatic life interaction techniques:

    1. Overview of aquatic life taxonomy
    2. Study of aquatic life relationships
    3. Evaluation of human effects on the local diving environment

    Underwater Photographer
    You will learn the basics of underwater photography such as composition, film type and camera handling, with special emphasis on practical techniques. You will look at underwater photography dive planning, organization, procedures, techniques and potential problems. You'll also learn how to care for and maintain your camera equipment:

    1. Choosing different types of equipment
    2. Selecting films and strobes
    3. Lighting angles
    4. Equipment maintenance
    5. Specific techniques for different types of shots

    Specialties for Open Water Divers with three training dives

    Underwater Navigation
    During your PADI Underwater Navigator Specialty course, you will be taught underwater navigation dive procedures, techniques, planning, organization and potential problems. You will also be introduced to natural navigation, underwater patterns, distance estimation and further your compass navigation skills.

    Deep Diver
    You will learn deep dive planning, organization, procedures, techniques and hazards. You will then be able to apply this knowledge on four open water dives that range from 18 - 40 metres / 60 - 130 feet. The course includes:

    1. Practicing navigation on deep dives
    2. Recording colour changes at depth
    3. Examining pressure-affected objects under water
    4. Practicing use of emergency breathing equipment
    5. Recompression chamber overview

    Wreck Diver
    Orientation to safely participate in wreck diving activities, this will include:

    1. The planning, organization, procedures, techniques, problems and hazards of wreck diving
    2. The preparation and use of lights, air supplies, special equipment, penetration lines and reels
    3. Limited-visibility diving techniques and emergency procedures
    Specialties for Advanced Open Water Divers with four training dives

    Search and Recovery
    You will learn search and recovery dive planning, organization, procedures, techniques and potential problems. You will also cover limited visibility, search patterns and safe object recovery using lift devices. You will look at:

    1. Pinpointing lost objects from the surface
    2. Boat and surface controlled searches
    3. Semicircular and alternate jackstay searches
    4. Practicing four different search patterns
    5. Practice raising larger objects

    Master Scuba Diver
    This certification denotes that you have reached the highest recreational diver level in the PADI system of diver education. PADI Master Scuba Diver indicates that you have a significant amount of training and experience in a variety of dive environments. To apply for your Master Scuba Diver certification you need:

    · PADI Open Water Diver certification (or qualifying certification from another organisation)
    · PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification (or qualifying certification from another organisation)
    · PADI Rescue Diver certification (or qualifying certification from another organisation)
    · 50 logged dives
    · Five PADI Specialty course certifications
    · Minimum age 15 years old (12 for Junior Master Scuba Diver)
